As part of a Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) under the European University of the Seas (SEA-EU), 15 students from the Universities of Split (Croatia), Kiel (Germany), Malta (Malta), Gdańsk (Poland), and Naples Parthenope (Italy) gathered in the Algarve from 7 to 11 July. This BIP, titled "Sustainability and Social Innovation on the Move", was organised by the University of Algarve in collaboration with the Universities of Gdańsk and Naples Parthenope, with the aim of deepening students’ understanding of sustainability and its critical role in addressing global challenges such as climate change, resource scarcity, and biodiversity loss.

The programme was structured in two parts: three preparatory online workshops featuring videos and research activities developed by the partner universities, followed by a week of theoretical and practical sessions on Culatra Island, located in the Ria Formosa Natural Park.

Throughout the course, the interconnection between environmental, social, and economic systems was explored, highlighting their importance in achieving a more sustainable future. Through case studies and interactive discussions, participants gained insights into sustainable practices across various fields, including environmental protection, renewable energy, water cycle management, seafood production, and tourism. The programme was aligned with the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, offering students the opportunity to explore key concepts related to sustainability, particularly within coastal communities.

Participants also acquired knowledge about the potential of the blue economy at a local level, along with strategies for community development and empowerment. The programme placed particular emphasis on building social capital, strengthening community cohesion, and promoting environmental sustainability.

This intensive programme provided a unique opportunity for participants to gain practical experience and knowledge, equipping them with the skills and tools to contribute effectively to a more sustainable and resilient future.
