Trocas em Faro holds its first edition at the UAlg with over 70 participants
Integrated within the framework of the European University of the Seas (SEA-EU), this community-based initiative promoting the circular economy, created in 2020, now benefits from the institutional support of UAlg, strengthening its connection with both the academic community and the wider region.
The event was attended by the Vice-Rector for Sustainability, Vânia Sousa, highlighting the importance of such initiatives in reinforcing the University of Algarve’s commitment to more sustainable and responsible practices.
The initiative was also supported by the UAlg V+ Group, a collaboration that will continue in future editions and further strengthens the active involvement of the academic community.
Since its creation, “Trocas em Faro” has been organising monthly events focused on the exchange of clothing, footwear, books and accessories, encouraging more sustainable and responsible consumption habits. The edition held at UAlg followed this model, allowing participants to bring up to 10 items in good condition and, in return, select new ones, thereby promoting reuse and waste reduction.
The event took place at the Civil Engineering Building of the Institute of Engineering (ISE), establishing itself as an open space for the community, where students, staff and the wider public actively engaged in an initiative aligned with the principles of sustainability and the circular economy.
“Trocas em Faro” takes place on the third Saturday of each month, maintaining its usual format. Tokens assigned to participants may be used in future editions, as well as in the exchange markets of Quelfes and São Brás de Alportel. Participation requires a minimum contribution of €1, with donations allocated to support local associations and projects.
The next edition will take place on 21 March, continuing this initiative that promotes more conscious and sustainable consumption habits.
The integration of this initiative within SEA-EU reinforces the University of Algarve’s commitment to sustainability, social responsibility and active engagement with the community, promoting practices aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals.
