Construction and Demolition Waste Clean-UP integrated into SEA-EU Goes Greener

On 29 March, a volunteer clean-up took place to remove Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) from Pinhal do Pontal, in the area surrounding Gambelas Campus of the University of Algarve. This initiative formed part of the SEA-EU Goes Greener task (WP4 – Task 4.4), under the European University of the Seas.

Coordinated by Professors Margarida Ribau Teixeira and Luís Nunes, the activity aimed to contribute to a more sustainable campus by restoring the natural conditions of the affected areas, while also raising awareness and promoting education on the proper management of waste.

A total of 14 volunteers took part, including University of the Algarve lecturers and students, along with staff from the company Europontal, Lda.

Around 30 m³ of CDW, three lorry-loads of tyres, and approximately 2.5 m³ of other waste (such as packaging, glass, piping, paper, and wipes) were collected.

This effort would not have been possible without the technical support of Europontal, Lda., a licensed company specialising in the collection, treatment, sorting, and recycling of construction waste. We extend our sincere thanks for their invaluable assistance.

As part of SEA-EU, the University of the Algarve encourages everyone to play their part in the responsible disposal of waste. In cases where CDW is generated from small-scale construction work within the municipality of Faro, the municipal company Fagar, E.M. should be contacted.
