Applications are now open for the Manuel Gomes Guerreiro Prize
Organised by the University of Algarve, with the sponsorship of Faro City Council and Loulé City Council, the Prize has a single monetary value of 10,000 euros.
Chaired by the UAlg vice-rector for Research and Culture, Nuno Bicho, the jury for the 2024 edition is made up of three former rectors, Ana da Costa Freitas (rector of Évora University from 2014 to 2022); António Fontainhas Fernandes (rector of the University of Trás-os-Montes from 2013 to 2021); João Luís Gaspar (rector of the University of the Azores from 2014 to 2022); and the emeritus professors of the University of Algarve, João Albino Silva, Maria Teresa Dinis and Pedro Ferré.
Authors of any nationality will be admitted to the competition, with a particular focus on encouraging young researchers.
Each candidate may only submit work that has been published in the year of the competition or the previous year, and which has not previously been awarded a prize. If the candidate submits a doctoral thesis to the competition, it will only be accepted if it has been completed, defended and approved.
The works submitted to the competition must be written in Portuguese or English. The prize will be awarded in December of each calendar year at the University Day public ceremony.
It should be remembered that the ‘Professor Manuel Gomes Guerreiro Award’ was publicly presented on 24 January 2019, when the rector of UAlg, Paulo Águas, recalled that ‘institutions must have a memory in order to have a future’, remembering the illustrious professor and researcher, the first rector of the University of Algarve, on the occasion of the centenary of his birth.
