UAlg continues to be recognised globally as a pioneer in its commitment to the SDGs

For the fifth time, the University of the Algarve (UAlg) has been included in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, which assesses the performance and contribution of universities to the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on a global level. UAlg was ranked 301-400 in the overall THE Impact Rankings, out of 1963 Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) from 125 countries.

It should be noted that this edition had 372 more HEIs and 13 more countries than the previous edition, which met the inclusion requirements.

In this sixth edition, UAlg submitted information for all the SDGs. Each goal has several specific metrics associated with it, which measure the impact of HEIs in achieving that SDG. Universities can submit data for as many SDGs as they wish, but to be included in the global ranking they must submit data for a minimum of 4 SDGs, and goal 17, which accounts for partnerships for the development of the goals, is mandatory.

UAlg was assessed on all 17 SDGs, obtaining an overall score of 79.0 out of 100, a reduction of 1.1 compared to 2023 (80.1). The Algarve Academy stood out in SDG 2 - Eradicate Hunger (68.4), ranking 101-200 out of 803 HEIs that presented evidence of contributions to this goal; SDG 5 - Gender Equality (64.5), ranking 101-200 out of 1361 HEIs; SDG 10 - Reduce Inequalities (69. 9), ranked 101-200 out of 1108 HEIs; SDG 13 - Climate Action (72.3), ranked =62 out of 924 HEIs; SDG 14 - Protect marine life (63.1), ranked 101-200 out of 628 HEIs; and SDG 16 - Peace, justice and strong institutions (73.0), ranked 101-200 out of 1086 HEIs.

In this ranking, which evaluates universities for the way they contribute to society, institutions are judged on three indicators: research, which produces knowledge to help solve the world's problems; administration, which must manage resources well; and direct action, i.e. the way the university acts in society.

Inclusion in this ranking and the results obtained are a great achievement for UAlg, which has been recognised as a global pioneer, demonstrating its commitment not only to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals through teaching, research and knowledge transfer, but also to incorporating these goals into the institution's main guidelines.
