UAlg at Expo 2025 Osaka - Japan

University of Algarve: Where the sea inspires science and connects continents.

The University of Algarve participate in Portugal's pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, Japan, on 26 and 27 June. Our proposal is bold and innovative: an animated video that combines science, art and intercultural dialogue. It is inspired by Japanese visual aesthetics and will create an immersive and visually captivating narrative.

This record is the starting point for raising awareness of the Ria Formosa Natural Park and the research projects developed by UAlg. The iconic seahorse, which has faced a drastic decline in the last two decades, is the central character.  The animation draws on traditional elements of Japanese imagery. These include panel composition, decorative patterns and cinematic landscapes. It is clear that it refers directly to the world of anime and manga.

This creation is more than just an audiovisual piece; it is an invitation to discovery. It brings together research centres, collaborative laboratories, companies, industry and diverse audiences. It confirms the role of science as a bridge between cultures. UAlg's new approach to knowledge communication is clear: innovation, storytelling and Japanese visual culture.

In this context, and in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Research Units also share contributions related to SDGs 7 and 14. Science is at the core of UAlg's mission to forge a more balanced and inclusive future. Expo 2025 Osaka is a prime opportunity to showcase the university's cutting-edge research and reinforce its role as a global agent of transformation.
