Arts and Communication Research Centre

About the Centre

The Arts and Communication Research Centre is a research unit evaluated by the Foundation for Science and Technology, created in 2008 as a result of the merger of two non-funded research centres: the Communication Sciences and Arts Research Centre (University of the Algarve) and the Theatre and Cinema Research Centre (IPL Theatre and Cinema School).

This R&D Unit has been developing innovative research in the areas of artistic (visual arts, cinema, theatre) and cultural studies, communication and, more recently, literary studies (digital archives, digital critical editions), associating the production of dissemination platforms with the study of ways of communicating scientific knowledge in the designated areas.

Somos Todos Mar - a screen for citizenship or art for garbage is a hybrid artistic project in Digital Media Art - MAD. Within the academic and artistic-digital framework of the PhD in MAD, the project is presented as a video art installation integrated into an artificial scenario of an interactive plastic curtain. Research into the artistic practice of this project relied on the a/r/cographic methodological structure, in which the various stages of reflection, creativity and action are generative throughout the journey of inspiration, conception and realization of the project.

This project, part of the presentation of a collective of MAD projects entitled RIZOMA, was developed for the Convento do Espírito Santo in Loulé, alerting visitors to the exhibition to the value of the natural heritage and reinforcing its cultural and collective identity. The environmental problems experienced over the last few decades of the 21st century require individual attention and the intervention of everyone, multidisciplinary in the various areas of knowledge, for a creative search for solutions in the construction of a healthier and more active citizenship. Literacy for the oceans, the planet's oxygen producers, is developed in the Somos Todos Mar (We Are All Sea) project to raise awareness and intervention for the protection of the sea through communication in MAD. The relevance of literacy for the oceans is enriched by literacy in MAD, where citizens are awakened to this global issue, both as digital creators and as consumers of digital media. MAD, a screen for Citizenship, is also a potential digital artistic expression as a communication channel, with local and global access. The creation of the Somos Todos Mar Project operates on image and content of artistic, social and environmental relevance and presents in the group exhibition a two-part installation - video art and an Interactive Plastic Curtain.
