About the Centre
The CinTurs' mission is the development and transfer of knowledge for the sustainable development of tourist destinations and the well-being of tourists, visited communities and tourism industry workers.
The CinTurs is financed by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and obtained the classification of “Very Good” at every appraisal. The CinTurs has the maximum score within the FCT’s Portuguese R&D Units assessed by the jury for Tourism and Hospitality in 2018.

SEARM-FIT - Socioeconomic artificial reef monitoring: fisheries interaction with tourism (2023 - 2025)

Artificial reefs (AR) have been deployed around the world and are used primarily to boost biodiversity and to restore degraded habitats for commercial or recreational purposes. In the SEARM-FIT project, a non-intrusive research tool based on the Internet of Things (IoT) was used to study the potential human use in the ARs implemented in the Algarve region of southern mainland Portugal.

SusTowns – Enhancing SUStainable tourism attraction in small fascinating med TOWNS (2019 - 2022)

The international project SusTowns, financed by the Interreg MED program, aimed to develop local-scale action plans for sustainable tourism that considered economic and social development, as well as tourist flows, in a way that was environmentally sustainable. This was to be achieved in small cities of great historical value, small coastal islands and small inland cities along the Mediterranean coast, such as Lagos, Cuba and Culatra.

The Tuna Route - Nautical tourism routes for Europe (2018-2019)

The project established a new thematic touristic route, celebrating the iconic status, cultural heritage and economic importance of Bluefin Tuna in the Western Mediterranean. The Tuna Route aimed to showcase traditional tuna fishing methods and promote the areas and local cuisines associated with this centuries-old practice. The project also involved designing sustainable tourism development strategies to promote maritime sports, recreational fishing and gastronomy.
