CWTS Leiden Ranking

The CWTS Leiden Ranking provides important information on the scientific performance of more than 1.500 of the world's most prestigious universities.

This ranking is produced by the Center for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) at Leiden University in the Netherlands and includes universities that have published a minimum number of scientific or peer reviewed articles in the period in question in international scientific journals, excluding books, conference proceedings and publications in non-indexed journals. 

For a publication to be eligible for this ranking, it must be written in English, have one or more authors (anonymous publications are not accepted), not have been subject to rectifications and be published in a leading journal. 

The CWTS Leiden Ranking 2025 includes universities that have published at least 800 scientific or review articles in the period between 2020 and 2023 in scientific journals and is based on bibliographic data from the Web of Science database, produced by Clarivate™. CWST Leiden Ranking 2025 

The CWTS Leiden Ranking 2025, which includes 1594 Higher Education Institutions from 77 countries, 9 of which are Portuguese, which assesses four types of indicators, the most important being the quantity and impact of scientific publications (Scientific Impact), places the University of the Algarve (UAlg) in position 144 at European level and 412 at world level. These positions are the result of the indicator that uses the proportion of the university's publications that, in comparison with other publications in the same field and in the same year, belong to the 10% most cited, allowing institutions to be compared regardless of their size. 

In terms of collaboration, measured by publications in partnership with other universities, UAlg ranks 73 in Europe and 148 worldwide, and in international collaborative publications UAlg performs very well, ranking 50 in Europe and 109 worldwide. UAlg's biggest highlight in this ranking is gender equality, with UAlg ranking 23th in Europe and 26rd worldwide for having a high proportion of scientific publications by female authors in relation to the total number of male and female publications.
