Conditions of access

The admission requirements for this study cycle are established in Decree-Law no. 9A/2025 of 14 February:

1) Proficiency in spoken and written Portuguese, as well as mastery of the essential rules of logical and critical argumentation (Article 17(1) of Decree-Law no. 9A/2025), to be assessed during the application process.
2) Possession of a degree in Basic Education or another undergraduate degree, provided it meets the minimum training credit requirements (points a) and b) of Article 18(2) of Decree-Law no. 9A/2025), distributed across the training components as follows:
            a) Subject areas and subject-specific teaching methodologies: minimum of 90 credits;
            b) General educational area: 10 to 20 credits.

The credits relating to the subject area training components must be distributed as follows:
                  a) 20 to 30 credits in Portuguese;
                  b) 20 to 30 credits in Mathematics;
                  c) 20 to 40 credits in Natural Sciences and in History and Geography of Portugal;
                  d) 18 to 25 credits in Artistic Education and Physical Education.

Applicants holding an undergraduate degree in which they have obtained at least 75% of the required minimum training credits may also apply for admission to this study cycle.
Enrolment in curricular units relating to subject-specific teaching methodologies and initiation to professional practice, including supervised teaching practice, may take place simultaneously with the completion of any outstanding credits. It is the responsibility of the legally and statutorily competent body of the higher education institution to determine which curricular units from the training components referred to in points a), b), and c) of Article 15(1) are to be undertaken by the candidates in order to obtain the credits required for the award of the master’s degree.

 

Criteria for selection of the candidates

Candidate selection will be carried out by the course coordination committee, which will propose the final list of admitted and reserve candidates. The ranking of candidates will be based on the following preferences:
1st Preference: Holders of a degree in Basic Education.
2nd Preference: Holders of other undergraduate degrees, provided they meet the minimum training credit requirements as follows:
      a) Subject areas and subject-specific teaching methodologies: minimum of 90 credits;
      b) General educational area: 10 to 20 credits.

The credits relating to the subject area training components must be distributed as follows:
         a) 20 to 30 credits in Portuguese; 
         b) 20 to 30 credits in Mathematics; 
         c) 20 to 40 credits in Natural Sciences and in History and Geography of Portugal;   
         d) 18 to 25 credits in Artistic Education and Physical Education.

3rd Preference: Holders of other undergraduate degrees, provided they have completed at least 75% of the required training credits, distributed as follows:
      a) Subject areas and subject-specific teaching methodologies: minimum of 90 credits;
      b) General educational area: 10 to 20 credits.
       The credits relating to the subject area training components must be distributed as follows: a) 20 to 30 credits in Portuguese; b) 20 to 30 credits in Mathematics; c) 20 to 40 credits in Natural Sciences and in History and Geography of Portugal; d) 18 to 25 credits in Artistic Education and Physical Education.

Within each preference group, candidates will be ranked according to the following criteria, in order of priority:
1) Final grade of the undergraduate degree;
2) Assessment results in the test of spoken and written Portuguese, and of the essential rules of logical and written argumentation;
3) Year of completion of the undergraduate degree, with priority given to those who completed it earlier;
4) Age of the candidate, with priority given to older candidates.
