Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects
The ranking compares more than 1800 higher education institutions.
The Shanghai Ranking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects is a ranking of higher education institutions, conducted by Shanghai's Jiao Tong University and ever since by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy. It is one of the three most influential and widely observed international university rankings.
This ranking is based on objective academic indicators of scientific productivity and research quality, collected from internationally recognized databases, mainly by Clarivate™, to measure the performance of universities worldwide in specific disciplines.
The indicators are grouped into five categories:
- World-Class Faculty
- World-Class Output
- High Quality Research
- Research Impact
- International Collaboration
The University of Algarve (UAlg) integrates once again the list of the best in the world in Shanghai Ranking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2025, highlighting in the area of Hospitality & Tourism Management, being the only Portuguese institution to remain in the top 100, ranking 76-100. UAlg also stands out on Agricultural Sciences, having ranked 401-500.
In this recently published edition, UAlg is the only Portuguese institution to remain in the Top 100 of the Shanghai Ranking in the area of Hospitality & Tourism Management.
In the latest edition of this ranking 57 scientific areas are evaluated, listing up to 500 higher education institutions, from among the approximately 2000 classified, originating across some 100 countries and regions.
