Inauguration of the new rector marks celebrations of the University of Algarve day
The Academic Procession, scheduled for 3:30 p.m., will open the ceremony, which will include representatives of the institution’s governing bodies, faculty, students, staff, and guests.
The program begins with an address by the outgoing Rector, Paulo Águas, followed by remarks from the President of the General Council of UAlg, Álvaro Beleza. The inauguration of the new Rector and her team will then take place, formally marking the start of a new chapter for the University.
Next, three representatives of the academic community—a staff member, the President of the Student Union, and a faculty member—will share their perspectives on the present and future of the institution.
In keeping with tradition, the ceremony will also honor merit and career achievements.
The program includes the awarding of medals and diplomas to staff members who have completed 25 years of service, recognizing their dedication and contribution to the institution’s growth and reputation over the decades.
This will be followed by the presentation of the University of Algarve Award to graduates who excelled during the 2023/2024 academic year, celebrating outstanding students and their academic achievements.
The ceremony will also feature the introduction of UAlg’s new PhDs, highlighting the importance of advanced training and research at the University, as well as the renewal of critical mass serving science and the region.
In the field of research and science communication, the 3MT-UAlg Award and the UAlg Researcher Award will be presented, recognizing excellence in scientific dissemination and the quality and impact of research conducted at the institution.
There will also be a moment dedicated to honoring staff and faculty who retired in 2025, publicly acknowledging their careers and commitment to the University’s growth.
The session will include two musical performances, adding a cultural note to the celebration and interspersing the formal proceedings.
The program concludes with an address by the new Rector, who, in her first official speech as the institution’s leader, will share her vision and strategic priorities for this new chapter in the life of the University of Algarve.
