Zélia Cristina Pereira Velez is a researcher and invited professor at the University of Algarve and CCMAR, holding a PhD in Biological Sciences from the University of Évora. Her research focuses on neurophysiology, cell biology, olfactory systems, and the effects of environmental changes on marine organisms, particularly fish and elasmobranchs.
Her work addresses the neural and olfactory effects of ocean acidification, salinity, and temperature changes in marine species, combining electrophysiology, molecular biology, histology, transcriptomics, and pharmacology. She also develops studies on chemical communication in fish and applications such as artificial baits.
Author of numerous publications in international peer-reviewed journals, with presentations at national and international conferences. She teaches in undergraduate and master's programs, supervises PhD, master's, and undergraduate theses, and delivers advanced training courses.
Active in science outreach through school projects, CCMAR and University of Algarve initiatives. Guest editor, reviewer for international journals, and member of academic juries.
