Paula Cardoso holds a Ph.D. in Art History from the Nova University of Lisbon (2019). Her dissertation focused on the production, patronage and use of illuminated liturgical books by Portuguese Dominican nuns, revealing new information about the nuns' agency and the connections between art, gender and communal memory. Part of this research was conducted at the Medici Archive Project in Florence, Italy, where she held a junior research fellowship in 2017. In 2021, she was awarded a Marie Sklodowska Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship by the European Commission to develop a two-year postdoctoral project at Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona). She has published with internationally renowned publishers such as Brill, Taylor & Francis, Brepols, De Gruyter and Routledge. Paula currently works at the Institute of Medieval Studies at the Nova University of Lisbon. She has been awarded a 6-year junior research contract under the Scientific Employment Stimulus (CEEC) programme of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). Her current research explores the interconnections between visual and textual culture, gender, and liturgy in shaping convent culture, through a focus on Portuguese mendicant nunneries (c. 1400–1600). Since 2024, she is also an invited assistant professor in the Department of Arts and Humanities at the University of Algarve.
