Óscar Ferreira is an Associate Professor (with Aggregation) with a PhD in Marine Sciences (Coastal Dynamics), specialised in Coastal Dynamics, Coastal Risks and Coastal Management, researching these topics for more than 30 years and teaching them at the university level for 26 years. He was a member of the direction board of the Centre for Marine and Environment Research (CIMA) at the University of Algarve. He is the director of the MSc programme on Coastal Hazards and was a member of the Direction Board of the BSc in Marine and Coastal Management from the University of Algarve, he was the Head of both the PhD on Marine, Earth and Environmental Sciences and the MSc on Marine and Coastal Systems, from the University of Algarve. Óscar Ferreira participated in more than 40 national and international research projects, being the coordinator of four national research projects and one European-funded project and member of the steering committees at the European projects MICORE and RiscKIT (FP7), devoted to risk analysis at coastal areas and assessment of risk reduction measures. Óscar Ferreira published more than 170 articles in referenced international journals (mostly Q1 and Q2) on coastal erosion, dynamics, risks and management, including modelling, evolution assessment, definition of indicators and risk analysis. Recent results of his research include the development of an alert system for coastal risks (under the EU MICORE project and the FCT EWCoast project) and the development of a series of tools (storm database, coastal management support online guide, multi-criteria analysis to support coastal management, assessment and identification of coastal risk hotspots, coastal risk/erosion alert system and decision support system) applied to case studies of 10 European countries (under the RiscKIT EU funded project). Óscar Ferreira supervised or co-supervised about 20 concluded master theses (6 ongoing), and 12 concluded PhD theses (3 ongoing). He also supervised 15 post-docs and more than 30 grant holders from funded projects. He is a reviewer for the most relevant journals in his area of expertise and he has been an evaluator of international grants and research project proposals (e.g. for the European Commission, NWO, IWT, FCT).
