Natália Tomás Marques is Assistant Professor of Biotechnology in the Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering at the University of Algarve (UAlg), Portugal. She completed her degree in Applied Biology in 1991 (Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon, Portugal) and obtained her PhD in Biological Sciences specialty Biotechnology in 2004, by the University of Algarve. In her teaching activity she is responsible for courses in the field of Biotechnology, namely Molecular Biology, Advanced Genetic Engineering (Biotechnology Master) and Virology (Integrated Master in Pharmaceutical Sciences). She is involved with scientific editing and has been a member of the Editorial Board of Indian Phytopathology since 2023. She is the Principal Investigator directing the Virology Laboratory. Moreover, she is a member of the Centre Mediterranean Institute for Agriculture, Environment and Development (MED - https://www.med.uevora.pt/) at UAlg and Associate Laboratory CHANGE - Global Change and Sustainability Institute. The research interests are concerned to the study of viruses and the interaction with its hosts, at the molecular level and using omics technologies. Research interests now focus on two agents that severely affect the citrus industry, Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) and the psyllid Trioza erytreae, a vector of the Huanglongbing disease caused by Candidatus Liberibacter. She supervised 1 postdoctoral study, co-supervised 2 doctoral thesis and 4 master thesis and more than 15 bachelor's degree works. She has published several scientific articles in international journals in the field of virology related to the analysis of CTV nucleotide variability and the virus's silencing suppressor genes that interfere in plant RNAi. She also published scientific articles in the field of molecular analysis of the synthesis of terpene compounds produced by Thymus spp., sponsored by Banco Santander Totta as part of the Ceratonia award she received. Received awards for best poster presentation at two different congresses. Recent studies since 2019: a) completed as PI the SourUnion project that studied the decline disease that occurs in the rootstock Citrus aurantium as a result of the interaction with severe CTV isolates; b) collaborated in the project TomVirProtect to study the Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), conducted by the University of Évora - was responsible for studying the impact of viral antisense sequences on Nicotiana benthamiana viral resistance; c) was a collaborator in the H2020 PRE-HLB project, which studied the psyllid Trioza erytreae, a vector of the Huanglongbing disease that affects citrus trees; d) is currently a collaborator on the PRR project “Valorization of Genetic Resources” led by DRAPAlgarve, where micrografting is used to obtain virus-free citrus; e) is also collaborating in an Euphresco project led by Khaled Djelouah from CIHEAM-Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari, Italy, to study rapid and efficient methods to detect and identify severe strains of CTV.
