Maria holds a degree in Biology, a master’s in Biomedical Sciences and a PhD in Earth, Marine and Environmental Sciences (Biotechnology) from UAlg. Her doctoral research on the biotechnological potential of coastal salt-tolerant plants underpins her work in marine and environmental biotechnology, with emphasis on sustainable resource use. In 2018, she co-founded the XtremeBio research group at CCMAR, focusing on applications of salt-tolerant plants in bioactive compound discovery, saline agriculture and phytoremediation. She has participated in 14 R&D projects (including one as coordinator and PI) and 4 COST Actions. Since 2022, she has been a Junior Researcher under the FCT Contract Programme, leading the Halo-In project on in vitro propagation and cryopreservation of coastal plants. She also coordinates the WeTreat project (Water4All/0011/2023) on wetland-based solutions for micropollutant removal and recently secured MycoBoost, a CCMAR seed-funded project dedicated to the isolation and functional characterisation of salt-tolerant fungal endophytes to enhance crop salinity resilience. Since 2021, Maria has been an Invited Assistant Professor in the IMBRSea master’s programme and has supervised 32 students. She serves as a guest editor for Marine Drugs, Plants and Applied Sciences, is an Early Career Editor for Sustainability, and reviews for international journals. Her output includes over 110 peer-reviewed publications and 74 conference presentations. International research spanning Europe, Africa, the Middle East and South America has strengthened her international profile in plant biotechnology and bioremediation.
