Alexandra Teodósio has been the Rector of the University of the Algarve (UAlg) since 2025. She is a Full Professor of Marine Sciences, holding a degree in Marine Biology and Fisheries (1988) and a PhD in Biological Oceanography (1996), both from UAlg. She has coordinated bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programmes at the university. With more than 35 years of experience in teaching and research at the Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR)—where she also served as Deputy Director—her work focuses on the impacts of global change on aquatic food webs and biodiversity, including warming, acidification, invasive species, jellyfish blooms and plastic pollution, from tropical to temperate ecosystems. She coordinates the Ecoreach Group – Ecology and Restoration of Riverine, Estuarine and Coastal Habitats, and leads the South Iberian Lower Guadiana plankton time series, active since 1997. She has participated in more than 30 European and national research projects and is a permanent external evaluator for both the Flanders Research Foundation (FWO) and the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation (FCT). Recently, she was the project leader of EMREP (EEA Grants Portugal), which developed and integrated electronic monitoring and reporting (iEMR) systems to remotely identify and reduce elasmobranch bycatch in Portuguese trawl fisheries. She also coordinated initiatives such as Blue Route 2030 (EEA Grants) and Horizons of Sustainability (Horizon Europe – SHEs), promoting interdisciplinary postgraduate training with open access to associate partners in Africa, Asia and the Americas. She has extensive experience supervising early career researchers, having supervised 16 PhD students (8 completed), 27 Master’s students, and more than 50 undergraduate projects. She actively promotes citizen science initiatives in Portugal and Africa and leads capacity-building programmes in marine sciences across African countries. She promoted and coordinated the Consortium of Marine Science Schools of the UNESCO Centre for Science and Portuguese Language (CIÊNCIA LP), supporting PhD scholarships for students from Portuguese-speaking African countries and Timor-Leste (FCT funding). She also served on the board of the CoLAB for Sustainable and Smart Aquaculture, contributing to research lines advancing lower-trophic-level blue food production as a key solution for human and planetary health. She has undertaken several research sabbaticals at leading international institutions, including the Universities of Kiel, Aberdeen, and Miami (2015/16), and the Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM) in Barcelona. From 2017 to 2025, she served as Vice Rector of UAlg, first for Research and later for Internationalisation and Sustainable Development. She coordinated the PRR Impulsos FOSTEAM@SOUTH, emphasizing pedagogical innovation and practical, research-based learning.She led the creation of the Gender Equality and Inclusivity Plan (PI2UAlg), and held management roles in the South Inter University Campus Association. She also chairs the UAlg+ Sustainable and Healthy Council, responsible for annual SDG reporting. Between 2022 and 2025, she was Vice Rector for the Internationalisation portfolio of the European University of the Seas – SEA EU. She is or has been Associate Editor of several scientific journals (Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science; Diversity) as well as of the citizen science magazine UAlgoritmo®. She is the author of more than 150 peer reviewed publications and several books and book chapters. Her scientific collaborations include 67% international and 7% academic–corporate partnerships. A substantial proportion of her work contributes directly to the UN 2030 Agenda, particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and SDG 15 (Life on Land).
