The Wat[H]ER project addresses the challenge of water scarcity and climate change in rural Mediterranean areas by demonstrating the effectiveness of Water Heritage Systems (WHS) in securing water during droughts. WHS, developed over centuries through local knowledge and sustainable resource management, have proven resilient but are now threatened by neglect, making ongoing care crucial for their sustainability. Given that WHS exist across national borders, a transnational approach is essential as it addresses their diverse forms (such as ponds and irrigation channels) and their shared ability to secure water while positively impacting the environment. The project aims to reverse neglect, restore selected WHS, and demonstrate their continued value as vital water sources.
