The GREEN DUNE project’s general objective is to develop (Output 1.1) and commercialize (Output 1.2) an innovative technology –the GREEN DUNE®Photobioreactor –and make its scaled-up demonstration in three real case scenarios: wastewater treatment of an extensive marine aquaculture; microalgae cultivation; and bioremediation of an intensive marine aquaculture’s waters. It is aprismatic photobioreactor that has a higher water capacity per area, allowing bigger volumes of microalgae cultivation in the same available space. The frontal face is inclined in an angle that maximizes its sun exposure, and it has an air and CO2 injection system that creates a water rotation within, from the frontal face upwards, intermittently exposing the microalgae to the sunlight and enhancing its productivity. This innovative photobioreactor brings much better conditions for theaquaculture of microalgae, treatment of aquaculture’s wastewater, and bioremediation of eutrophic natural water bodies. It is a new technology that improves the environmental performance of the blue economy, being an integral part of the sustainable development of the aquaculture industry, since among its main applications is the treatment of aquaculture wastewater and the bioremediation of coastal waters with excess minerals, nutrients, and other pollutants. The technology contributes directly to the reduction of emitted pollution, characterizing itself as an eco-friendly product that efficiently use resources, such as water and energy –more technical details are going to be presented further.
